During our math lesson, we played a fun game to build the fluency of addition facts.  Each pair of students had 5 pom poms.  They took turns "hiding" some of the pom poms while their partner had to figure out how many were missing.

At center time, we played another "fair share" game to practice odd and even numbers.  We also had 2 more activities to work on addition fluency.  It's so exciting to notice how quickly the students can come up with the answers to these equations!

It was Cat in the Hat day!  This morning we practiced reading a mini-book we started yesterday.  The kids had to find their reading buddy by matching cards with rhyming words.

We also found "the Cat" in our 100s chart, and made a cut and glue project.  Tomorrow we will make a story connection by writing what we like to do when it rains outside.

We will be celebrating all things "Seussy" this week!  Today, we drew and painted Dr. Seuss-style fish to go along with the story "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish".  We are putting the fish on our door and in the hallway...please check them out next Monday at RIFF Night.  (RIFF is our all-district reading celebration.  It will be at Pineview from 6-8pm, and there are LOTS of reading activities for families to do in the classrooms.  PTO is also having a silent auction in the cafeteria.  It  is SUPER FUN!!)

We will also continue to learn about coins this week, and of course, play rhyming games!

We're taking a break from our morning "Daily News" to try word building. And boy is it tricky!  Today we talked about the letters in Madisyn's name, then tried rearranging the letters to make other words.  After a slow start, the kids came up with 13 words (definitely a "kiss your brain" moment :).

During our reading time, we played a fun game called SCOOT.  The kids had to move around the tables and write down the missing beginning sound from all the words.

Our math lesson was on probability.  Each table had a bag of candy hearts and the kids took turns pulling one out and tallying the color.  Afterwards, we talked about which color they pulled out most often, and why that happened.  (The bags had many more of 1 color.)

We have been enjoying the Valentine story "Froggy's First Kiss."  Today we brainstormed who we like to kiss, and what we would NEVER want to kiss! :)

"I like kisses from mom and dad, but I would never want kisses from a fish!"

We also tasted hershey "kisses" and "hugs" and graphed our favorites.

Happy Valentine's Day!!
In literacy centers this week we are working on ABC order, counting syllables, and writing sentences with spaces.

During our math lesson, we made a "fair share" book to practice odd and even numbers...

And of course, we celebrated Valentine's Day!!! The kids were SO excited to open the cards from their friends.  Here are a few pictures from our afternoon...

Today we played a partner game in math to practice addition...CARD ATTACK!  The kids turned over 2 cards and added the hearts together to come up with a sum.  It was super fun :)

We also made "friendship paintings."  Everyone had a paint color to add to the paper...when we were finished, we had a picture that all our friends helped paint!

We survived the 100th day of kindergarten!  Here are some of the activities we did today...

We had to search around the room for number cards, then highlight them on the 100s chart.  Surprise...there was a secret message!

We also worked with a partner to count by 10s to 100 (the ice cream cones), and made pictures of how we'll look when we're 100 years old :)

Now we are 100 days smarter!!

Thursday, February 7, 2013

This afternoon we made a book called "Candy Hearts" to add to our book boxes.  The kids had to cut out the words for each page, then put them in the correct order to build a sentence.  Some smarties even noticed there was a pattern on each page! (We talked about that last week in one of our reading lessons :).

We also made symmetrical hearts (with dot stamps and coffee filters) to hang in our window...

Monday is our 100th day of school...we can't wait!!

Our word family chunk for this week is -en.  At literacy centers, we worked on sorting short "e" and short "a" words, and reading the words to our learning buddies.  We also built "sight word" rockets (sight words are the words we know by "sight" and can read fast when we see them in our stories).  We also played a fun game called MELT.  The kids took turns choosing a card from the bag and reading the word on it.  If the "melt" card was chosen, the game was over and all the cards they collected had to go back in the bag.

We started taking down all of our winter projects (since Spring is just around the corner... :), and began talking about Valentine's Day.  We listened to a story and brainstormed words to describe Valentine's Day.  (Don't you think chocolate should go in all the boxes?!)

We also did a heart weaving project...
